What is the Soil Conservation District?
Soil Conservation Districts were formed and created by federal law in 1937 as a response to the devastating soil erosion conditions that led to the Dust Bowl. Districts are organized locally, across all 50 states.
Each District exists to promote the conservation, management, and best use of soil, water and other natural resources.
No Two Districts are the Same
In Anne Arundel County, the Soil Conservation District works with two equally essential areas of our local economy: agriculture and urban development.
Farmers rely on the technical expertise of our District’s engineers and field specialists to design and install best management practices on their farms. Producers may also benefit from voluntary conservation programs to further protect natural resources in the County.
AASCD also plays a vital role in the prevention of erosion and sediment during construction activity. Our Urban Division reviews all sediment and erosion control plans for proposed construction projects in Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis.

The goal of the Anne Arundel Soil Conservation District is to increase awareness for the programs and services that the District provides. Additionally, the District seeks to develop new relationships and strengthen existing relationships with cooperators and other stakeholders.

In addition to technical assistance and cost-share programs, the Anne Arundel Soil Conservation District provides outreach and education programs to youth and the citizens of Anne Arundel County to increase awareness about our County’s vital natural resources and how to better protect them.

AGRICULTURE

URBAN DEVELOPMENT
Anne Arundel County ranks among the most desirable places to live in Maryland in part because of the County’s commitment to protecting natural resources. AASCD plays a vital role during construction projects in Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis. We review and approve grading, erosion, and sediment control plans for residential and commercial construction as well as forest harvest, mining, land fills stream restoration, and county or municipal projects.
EDUCATION
Education is an essential part of our mission, helping us to secure a sustainable and stable future for our farms, wetlands, and other vital natural resources.
Throughout the year, we provide field days, workshops, and educational programs to the public.
Youth Education: The Anne Arundel County High School Envirothon
All Anne Arundel County high schools are welcome to participate in the Envirothon, a hands-on event that challenges students to increase their skill and understanding of the core conservation issues:
- Aquatics
- Forestry
- Soils
- Wildlife
- And a fifth issue, which changes annually to reflect current conservation concerns.
